Have you ever explored a printer brand’s website? If so, you likely noticed the diverse range of products tailored to meet various needs.

For example, Xerox has several lines in their catalog, including the VersaLink, AltaLink, and PrimeLink machines.

In this blog, we’ll be comparing the AltaLink and PrimeLink families, two of the most prominent offerings in their lineup.

As a proud platinum partner of Xerox of nearly 40 years, we’ve sold quite a few AltaLink and PrimeLink machines to a wide range of workgroups.

This experience has provided us with a deep understanding of the product families, allowing us to clearly explain the differences between them.

However, this blog isn't going to be a fluff piece on the AltaLink and PrimeLink families. Not everyone will be suitable for these printers. For this reason, it’s important to explore all your options to find the best brand for your needs.

Our goal is to provide you with accurate and objective information to help you make an informed decision when purchasing your next office printer.

So, let’s get started and explore the features of both the AltaLink and PrimeLink printer families!

What Are Xerox AltaLink Printers?

Xerox AltaLink printers are designed for mid-sized to large workgroups that need reliable, high-volume multifunction devices (MFPs). All AltaLink models are MFPs and come with features tailored for productivity, security, and workflow automation.

The line is split into:

  • C8200 Series for color printing
  • B8200 Series for black-and-white printing

For example:

  • AltaLink B8255 (Black-and-white)
  • AltaLink C8235 (Color)

What Are Xerox PrimeLink Printers?

Xerox PrimeLink devices are entry-level production printers designed for high-quality image output, media flexibility, and light production environments. Unlike AltaLink, PrimeLink devices are multifunction printers with a strong focus on finishing capabilities and image quality.

The most well-known models:

  • PrimeLink C9065/C9070 for light production color
  • PrimeLink B9100 Series for black-and-white production

And a newer option:

  • PrimeLink C9200 Series for high-volume color

3 Differences Between Xerox AltaLink and PrimeLink Printers

Now that you have a general understanding of what the VersaLink and AltaLink printer families are, let’s jump into three of the main differences between the product categories:

1. Device Type & Functionality

The first major difference is in design purpose

AltaLink machines are multifunction devices built for office use. They include the ability to print, copy, scan, and fax.

PrimeLink machines are production printers focused primarily on professional-grade printing. Scanning and faxing are available as an option, but these devices are print-first.

In short, AltaLink is an office workhorse, while PrimeLink is a light-production printer aimed at environments where print quality and media flexibility matter most.

2. Features & Capabilities

Both machines are advanced, but the features reflect their intended use:

AltaLink is built around ConnectKey technology, which offers:

  • A customizable touchscreen interface
  • App integration via the Xerox App Gallery
  • Advanced scanning workflows
  • Security tools like user authentication and Secure Print

PrimeLink, on the other hand, does not fully support ConnectKey. Instead, it prioritizes:

  • High-resolution printing (up to 2400 x 2400 dpi 10-bit)
  • Finishing options like booklet making, stapling, GBC punching, and more
  • Media flexibility - supports thick stocks, banners, labels, and specialty media
  • Production-level color control, including optional Fiery DFE integration for precise color management

Bottom line: AltaLink is about office productivity and digital workflow integration. PrimeLink is about print quality, finishing, and versatility for professional output.

3. Cost & Use Case

Because of their different purposes, cost is another differentiator:

  • AltaLink machines generally cost more upfront than office-focused VersaLink models, but less than full production printers. They’re ideal for teams printing 20,000 to 75,000 pages per month.
  • PrimeLink printers sit between high-end office MFPs and digital presses. They're perfect for teams producing manuals, booklets, marketing collateral, and other materials where print quality and finishing matter.

For example:

  • An AltaLink C8270 may start at around $21,000, depending on the options.
  • A PrimeLink C9275 may start at around $34,000, depending on configuration.

PrimeLink printers usually cost more than AltaLink models because they are designed for light production and professional settings. These environments need better engineering and more advanced features.

The higher price reflects their production-ready abilities, ability to handle various media types, and professional finishing options. These features are typically unnecessary for regular office multifunction printers (MFPs) like AltaLink.

Note: Adding optional accessories or finishing options will increase both the cost and size of the printer. Learn more about print finishers here.

1 Similarity Between AltaLink and PrimeLink

Despite their different use cases, one key similarity ties these two product families together:

Both AltaLink and PrimeLink devices are designed for professional environments where uptime, dependability, and security are critical. They offer:

  • High monthly duty cycles
  • Advanced print quality and performance
  • Optional finishing options
  • Robust security standards (including compliance with industry protocols)

While PrimeLink doesn't use the entire ConnectKey technology platform, it still includes key Xerox security technologies like allowlisting, encrypted data transmission, and access controls.
